Perth Stadium is now 82 per cent complete and on track for the start of the 2018 AFL season.

The McGowan Government is delighted to have secured content for the stadium already, including the Ed Sheeran concert on March 3, 2018 and a lot of work will go into making sure the stadium can host this event.

In addition to this, English football giants Chelsea will take on Perth Glory in a friendly at the new stadium. The match is scheduled for July or early August, 2018.

The State Government is keeping the possibility of an earlier-than-scheduled completion open, with a number of events occurring before the Ed Sheeran concert under consideration for the official stadium opening.  The Government will continue to work with promoters and other stakeholders to investigate potential events befitting of the stadium’s world-class status.

However, hosting the December Ashes Test at the Perth Stadium presents too great a risk, which is why the State Government has confirmed with Cricket Australia that the Perth Test will be played at the WACA Ground from December 14 to 18, 2017.

The State Government is committed to making sure stadium users have the best possible event day experience by ensuring transport, logistics, staffing arrangements and other necessities are rigorously tested prior to opening.

Treasurer Ben Wyatt said, “Western Australian taxpayers have paid a lot of money for this stadium so it’s important we start to get some use out of it. It will be a world-class stadium when finished and an important community asset, and we are working very hard to get it finished on time.”
