Colin Barnett’s decision to cut all funding for financial counsellors will be a huge blow to people facing financial difficulties in the Electorate of Cannington.

Financial counselling services across the metropolitan area were told on Friday that funding for counsellors would be completely cut by October 1.

This means, services provided by the William Langford Community House (WLCH) in Langford which helps and supports the local and surrounding communities in the Cannington Electorate will no longer have a counsellor on site to assist people struggling with bills or other financial problems to get their lives back on track.

Ms Maria Cavill, Manager WLCH states “Financial Counsellors provide a vital service to help struggling West Australians in times of need and are simply too important to take away. This cut will have a devastating impact on many people in our community.

”Comments from Member for Cannington Bill Johnston MLA:

“This is just another cruel cut by the Barnett Government and it has come at the worst possible time.

“There are many people in my electorate who rely on this advice and assistance when they’ve fallen into financial trouble. The feedback we’ve received is that these services are currently taking on record numbers of cases and things will get worse as WA’s resources industry slows down.

“Colin Barnett is punishing the people who can least afford it to try and fix his horror budget.”
